Before setting off, we were given a full safety briefing, during which you could feel the excitement building.

Once on the track it took a little time to build up speed, getting used to the layout and to the steering on the kart, but then it was full throttle as we tried to get the best time. Faster scouts had to navigate their way between backmarkers who refused to leave the racing line, leading to some great overtaking manoeuvres.

There were a couple of scary looking spins along the way, but rest assured they were entirely harmless and the marshalls carefully managed the situation. After 40 laps of racing, there was a clear winner as Carl (surprise, surprise another sport which Carl is good at) set the fastest lap.

3rd Washington Scouts aims to provide opportunities for young people to have new adventures across the year, through our Tuesday night programme and additional weekend activities and camps. Find out more about Scouts at 3rd Washington.

<sites:pageName>scoutsstartyourengine</sites:pageName><sites:revision>3</sites:revision>

Scouts' Frostie:24

World Class Outdoor Adventure Meets World Class Science...

The Beaver Colony, the youngest section in the scouting family, opened with 12 young people on Tuesday 31st January 2012, a further 4 Beavers are expected to join next week. Through an active programme, our young people will have the chance to make friends, play games, go on visits and help others.

Making friends was top of the agenda on Tuesday night as Beavers enjoyed a night of games and getting-to-know-you activities. There's loads more to come during the first programme, leading up to a big launch night where Beavers will be invested.

The Group welcomes three new volunteers to run the section - Janet, Gemma and Nicola (or Rusty, Bubbles and TicTac as they will be known to Beavers). The names come from the book Friends of the Forest which is a book written specifically for Beavers.

@ Oxclose flashed, banged and popped their way into their new programme
by taking on the science badge. Last week brought the physical world:
some weird sounds, energetic energy and some buzzing electricity. Cubs
were challenged to repair circuits to make the buzzer buzz, to see if
they could see sound, and, to test some household objects to see whether
they were acids or alkali's. Cubs made easy work of it all, and so,
this week, it was time to turn up the heat (literally) and move to
chemistry, with a special, mystery scientist!

The night began with cubs arriving at the science lab, with the guest already waiting, then, cubs hung up their
coats and then put on their safety goggles, then, the fun began. The
night started with making hydrogen, and, then testing for it. Cubs had to
react magnesium with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen, and, cubs
learnt how to test for it; listen out for a squeaky pop! The Bunsen Burner's were
turned on and the spills lit, and the popping began, small pockets of
hydrogen were forming within the cubs' test tubes.

After that rather noisy introduction, cubs then moved onto flame
testing, and they had to test 7 different metals to see what they were
by putting them inside a Bunsen flame and seeing which colour it burned;
potassium was lilac, copper - blue, and sodium - orange. Then, to make
things a little more interesting, cubs were then asked to make a
sparkler out of filings of iron and some hydrochloric acid and, the
materials certainly worked their magic as before anyone could say 'bang'
the whole room was full of sparkles.

Cubs Testing for Methane

As the night progressed, neutralisation was next - turning an acid
neutral, and then, alkali, and, then, back to an acid. This was done by a
rather cool magnetic stirrer and a dash of universal indicator, so cubs
could see the difference between the states. Finally, the end of the
crazy night was nigh, but, there was one more trick up the scientist's
sleeve - methane, and bubbles of it!

Cubs
were finally challenged to light bubbles of methane to see how fast it
would react, some were scared, however, after a while, the methane
induced fear was over and it was back to lighting the room up with an
instantaneous orange glow (see the videos for more). Next week cubs will
be entertaining one and other as they take on the next challenge of the
BadgeFest programme - the entertainers badge, and, you can see all of
the action as the night unfolded in the photos zone.

BadgeFest is a programme in which cubs participate in a wide

As ever it was a packed weekend full of opportunities to make new friends, learn new skills and to have fun.

Scouts spent Friday night playing team games and getting to know each other ready to work together on Saturday morning. After a run to wake everyone up and a tasty sausage sandwich, Scouts were ready for the four activities that ran up to lunch. Scouts learned about using a GPS as they tackled our geocaching expert's challenge to race up Gainford's Spa fountain and find the cache, as well as pancake flipping (we know it's a little before pancake day, but it's good practice!), how to play kabaddi and a couple of lively games on the Xbox Kinnect. You can see from the photos that some of the pancakes did not go entirely to plan, some were barely recognisable as pancakes.

After lunch, we unpacked our walking boots and headed up to Egglestone Abbey for a scenic stroll along the Tees to Whorlton. There was plenty of laughs as Scouts found opportunities to roll down hills, splash each other with water and play tag. Scout took turns to navigate (using both GPS and good old map) to keep us on the straight and narrow as we headed along the banks.

Saturday evening challenged the imagination of our young people as we headed back to Egglestone Abbey for a wide game in the dark. Leaders split the group in two. Those who had never been to the abbey by night were led to the crypt for a fright. Phil and Danni jumped up from the darkness scaring Scouts to the amusement of those who'd been there before. There were still more frights as patrols explored the Abbey during the widegame, hunting among the ghoulish shadows for the illusive stick of life, avoiding the vampires played by the leader team.

Back at Gainford HQ, two mystery men arrived to tell ghost stories by candle light. One of the men was particularly mysterious wearing a long dark coat and black hat. He told of the Hand of Glory and how the ghostly occurrence haunts the Old Spital Inn. As the Hand of Glory struck, silence fell across the room. The candles flickered. The men disappeared as quickly as they arrived (we later found out he was none other than Gainford's Scout Leader, John Moore and Teesdale's DC Colin Clarke)
This weekend, 30 Scouts and their volunteer leaders got back outdoors for a crisp winter's walk near Rowland's Gill. After their first full week at School, young people were eager to get back outdoors - enjoying fresh air, jumping over small streams and spending some time having a laugh with their friends.

A 10am start meant something of a welcome lie-in and some extra time to dig out the walking boots, hats and gloves. We set off from Chopwell Woodland Park on a woodland trail in search of an elusive bird of prey, the Red Kite. Scouts walked together catching up with old mates and with some new friends who've recently joined the troops from Cubs.

"...being outside in the ice is really good," said 10 year old Daniel, "...it's a real buzz!"

Over the last few weeks, we've been thinking of others as we've made nativity animations, practiced Christmas carols, made Christmas sweets to die for and helped the Salvation Army prepare hampers. This week was the first opportunity in the programme for both troops to see each other and a brilliant chance to have fun with friends (120 of them between the 3rd Washington and 1st Fatfield Scout Troops).

For some of our young people, this really was an adventure as it took them time to get their balance and they clung onto the wall for dear life. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts took part in the Christingle Service at St. Andrews this weekend. Reverend Stephen Dallin led the service which encouraged everyone to
take some time out to enjoy the peace of Christmas and consider his theme, 'What's in a Name?'. Over 200 people
packed into the church many of them Scouts and their families.

Young people were involved from the beginning as Scouts helped make the Christingles on Saturday and then read at the service on Sunday. Ryan read a passage from the Gospels and Gabrielle read from 'The Word on the Street', a modern telling of book of John from the bible. Malcolm sang a solo, Let There be Peace on Earth, for the congregation and did a brilliant job, a proud moment for the Group. Well done Malcolm!

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts received a Christingle and the Reverend (with the help of some young people) explained the symbolic nature of the orange, the fruits, ribbon and the candle before we sang Away In A Manger by candlelight.

After
the service, many scouts and their families enjoyed a hot drink and
some social time before braving the cold outside.

3rd Washington Scouts are proud of their involvement in their local community. Setting the tone for the night at St Andrew's, Carl welcomed everyone and called PLs up to receive instructions for the first game, only to cover them with silly string.

The games kicked off with pass the parcel, Matty and Callum won some very festive hats during pass the parcel, who knew we had a little elf among
us. The mummies game quickly followed and Matty's patrol produced a mummy that would have made any Egyptian proud.

At St Andrew's, we tried a new game called Cheetos face where Patrol had to stick Cereal to their patrol leader's face, our PLs were particularly good sports covered in squirty cream. This was quickly followed by the Mars bar game.

The final game of the night was the welcome return of the Angel Delight game, another Christmas Party favourite and yet another messy game. If you've never played the game before, it starts with a "sand castle" of flour with a sweet on top, players take it in turns to slice away a section of the castle and if the castle falls, you have to eat the sweet without using your hands. As a forfeit, you then have to find a sweet in the angel delight (or porridge) without using your hands again. Try keeping a steady hand as you cut the flour while your patrol are willing you to knock it over!

Huge thanks to all of the Young Leaders, Adult Leaders and parent helpers who helped to make the night a huge success!

Next week is the final week of the Christmas Programme and we're off to the Ice Rink. Meet at St Andrew's Church at 7pm, wrap up warm, and know your shoe size.

PLs and APLs from the Group joined thousands in Durham City to visit Durham Lumieres 2011. Lumieres is Durham's biennial festival of light and brings together art from across the world to illuminate the streets of the city.

The walk around the city was magical
and every time we turned a corner, we found a new exhibit to challenge
our ideas about art. Around Millenium Square, we encountered Utopia, a large neon sign on the former ice rink. Flickering on the roof, it made us question whether there was really such a thing. Next we headed over the river to see 'Binary Waves', which is an installation which reacts to the radio and mobile phone signals around.

As we wandered the city, Scouts marvelled at the 'Marquess of Londonderry' situated in the Market Square which had been transformed into the 'I Love Durham' snowdome of light, complete with pink neon lights and a gigantic globe covering the statue.

As we walked up Bailey street, we saw the 'Pimp
Pallets' exhibit which at first glance was just an open wheelie bin, but
as we looked closer, we realised that it was actually art. Whether we
quite realised that was a bold statement about the use of colour in the
urban
environment, I'm not so sure.

The jewel in the festival display was the ‘Crown of Light’ which depicts the Lindisfarne Gospels as a stunning 20
minute slideshow projection across the whole of the front of the famous Durham Cathedral.

Our method for giving young people the opportunity to learn by doing is
