Scouts: Chinese New Year 2011

Today Scouts braved some pretty terrible weather to experience the noise, colour and theatre of Chinese New Year in Newcastle. The celebrations began under the Chinese arch at the tops of Stowell street with the first lion dance and continued their way down the street visiting all of the Chinese shops and restaurants to bring luck and fortune to the businesses.

While the lion dances, firecrackers are set off which are supposed to ward away evil spirits for the New Year. The noise was incredible as it echoed down the narrow street.

Scouts sampled some Chinese foods, Chinese crafts and Chinese music, some of which may not have been to everyone's taste! Some Scouts took to the fairground rides and proved that the weather wasn't going to put us off having a great time.
